How To Make A Throw Rope Bag

Going on a river adventure in a canoe or kayak is a lot of fun for people who love being in the water. But there is one thing that could make this experience even more fun, and that is the assurance of your safety. Having a throw rope bag on hand when canyoneering is one way to provide a sense of security near the water. In this article, we will discuss how to make a throw rope bag, how to use it, and some other essential things you should know about the throw rope bag as you explore canyons.

There are several steps in making a throw rope bag that will effectively save lives when needed. Remember, there are requirements set by the government for making a standard throw rope bag. Below is a set of instructions on how to make a proper throw rope bag for your canyoneering adventures.

1. Gather The Required Material

The first step is to gather all of the necessary materials for making a standard throw rope bag. The materials you need include:

  • A Large Closed Cell Foam Sheet
  • A Bottle Bag
  • A 1.5 Liter Water Bottle
  • A Grommet (with a hole of 0.5 inches)
  • 20 meters of polypropylene rope (ideally 0.5 inches thick)

You will also need tools such as an Xacto knife and a ruler.

2. Cut the Bottle

Begin by cutting the water bottle with your Xacto knife. The cut should be about 2 inches below the bottle’s spout. The cut should be about 4 inches wide. You may need to make this cut in a different location depending on the shape and size of the bottle.

Next, you’ll want to cut a hole on the bottom of the bottle. This cut should be just big enough to allow your rope to pass through (ideally about 0.5 inches). When you pass the rope through, the hole should give it a snug fit.

3. Measure Your Bag

Now it’s time to measure the length of your bottle bag. Use a ruler or tape measure to figure out how big it is. After measuring, subtract 1.5 inches from the length and width. Keep that number on hand for the next steps.

4. Cut Your Foam

Grab your closed cell foam sheets and cut them into the measurements that you came to in the last step.

Once appropriately sized, create an opening through the center of the foam beginning at the top, all the way to the bottom. This will allow your rope to pass through.

5. Install Your Grommet

Place the grommet at the bottom of the bottle bag.

6. Fix The Rope

Now, pull the rope through the bottle bag. To do this, pass the tope through the larger opening that you made on the top of the bottle. Then pull it out through the smaller hole near the bottom of the bottle.

You should also move the rope through the opening of the foam. Put the rope through wide opening of the bag rope. Then, pass it through the hole in the grommet at the bottom of the bag.

7. Tie a Knot

Next you will need to tie a stopper know. To do this, tie the rope into a loop and create a knot at the end of the rope. This ensures that the rope stays in the bag.

8. Stuff Everything Into The Bag

Finally, stuff everything into the bag. You can put the rope in the bag by coiling it, but stuffing it is a better option. Stuffing the rope reduces the chance of the rope tangling when you throw the bag.

Congrats! You have successfully made a throw rope bag!

What Is A Throw Rope Bag?

It is commonly known that using the throw rope bag is one of the safest ways to rescue people from drowning. Unfortunately, many people are not familiar what a throw rope bag is or how to use it.

A throw rope bag, also known as a throw line, is a rescue device that is used to save people from drowning in water. The device consists of a bag that has been stuffed with a long rope and other safety materials. It is designed in a manner that allows the cable to quickly find its way out of the bag when it is being thrown.

Most of the time, a throw rope bag is made from a cord or nylon material, and the ropes are made with polypropylene or other floatable materials. This is done to ensure that nothing compromises the device’s floating ability while on water. Durable synthetic materials are also often used for making the rope and bag because they last a long time on the water. This helps the throw line last longer without getting damaged, regardless of its constant contact with water.

Parts of the device, especially the rope, are intentionally made with bright and easily visible colors to ensure high visibility for the person who is being rescued with it. Finally, the throw rope bag comes in many designs to allow you to make your preferred choice. Throw rope bags can be designed to be worn around the waist, to fit into a small kayak, to be clipped onto your raft, etc.

How To Use A Throw Rope Bag

Now that we have discussed what a throw rope bag is and how to make one, it’s important to talk about how to properly use this device. While canyoneering, it’s important to understand how to use a throw rope bag.

There are several steps to take with a throw rope bag in order to save someone from drowning. It’s important to understand each step because one mistake can cost a life. Below is a set of instructions on how to properly use a throw rope bag.

1. Recognize Danger

The first step is to identify the person who is potentially drowning. During your canyoneering adventures, it is likely that you will be near or in the water. Always keep an eye out for others around you. If you notice someone struggling in the water, especially if there are strong rapids, it may be time to use the throw rope bag.

Make eye contact with the person in distress before you use the throw rope bag. Doing this will help you to minimize the chances of making mistakes and increases your precision.

2. Communication

Throughout this process, communication is vital before throwing the rope bag. Alert the person in distress before throwing the rope so they can except it. One way to do this is to scream “ROPE” repeatedly before tossing the bag. This is a popular and effective way to communicate to the person in need of rescuing.

3. Throw The Bag

Now it’s time to throw the rope to the person in distress. Hold the bag and prepare to throw it with your dominant arm. Hold the loose end of the rope with your other hand. You can throw the bag over your head or under your waist- whichever works better for you.

When throwing the bag, aim for the had of the drowning person so they can easily grab the rope.

Be sure to hold on to the loose end of the rope tightly so you do now lose grip when throwing. It is important that you stay in a low position when throwing the rope bag. This ensures your safety as the thrower.

4. Prepare To Be Rescued

The person in distress should grab the rope as soon as they can. Once the rope is in their hands, the person being rescued should turn onto their back, point their feet downstream, and position the rope over their shoulder with both of their hands.

5. Pull Them Back Onto Land

Once you see that the person is in proper position in the water, you can begin to gently pull the swimmer back to the shore. It helps to allow the river to assist you with a pendulum effect.

You should use steady movements and try not to struggle too much when pulling the person back onto land.

6. Post-Rescue Care

Once the person is back on land, check them for any injuries. They may need medical attention.
